Louisville City FC midfielder Niall McCabe will undergo surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot and miss the rest of the 2022 season, the club announced Wednesday,
The 31-year-old from Ireland was in fine form until scratching from the lineup before LouCity’s Aug. 13 victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies having aggravated his foot in the warmup.
“I’m obviously gutted about the situation as I can no longer help the team on the pitch this year,” McCabe said. “However, I am positive moving forward with my recovery and will be supporting the lads off the pitch in any way I can in order reach our goals.”
Since missing the start of the season with a non-COVID-19 illness, McCabe had worked himself back into LouCity’s regular starting 11. His five assists on the year were tied for the team lead at the time of his injury, and he chipped in three goals as well.
“This injury came at an unfortunate time for Niall and our team,” said coach Danny Cruz. “He was finally getting back to full fitness after missing some time earlier this season and was performing at a high level. We are wishing him a speedy recovery.”
McCabe has played the balance of his professional career in purple since joining LouCity for its inaugural 2015 campaign. He ranks in the club’s top 5 all-time in career USL Championship appearances (191), minutes played (12,859) and assists (30).
