LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Thursday, Louisville City FC announced the release of midfielder Juan Guzman from his contract, per mutual agreement.
After a combined five years in USL — but just one historic season developing with Louisville City — Guzman will join first-division Colombian side Patriotas FC in Trunja, Colombia, for the 2016 season. Guzman spent his offseason training in his native Colombia after Louisville City’s inaugural campaign.
The terms of Guzman’s release are not disclosed, per Club policy.
“I’m extremely thankful to Louisville City for everything in 2015,” Guzman said. “It was a joy and pleasure to represent Louisville, and I will always remember the amazing season we had as a first year club and the incredible support from the fans.
“This decision has been very difficult and I will miss Louisville very much. I don’t have words to thank my teammates for everything or the coaching staff and owners for helping me realize this dream of playing first division football in my home country.”
Guzman, a Charlotte, N.C., native, played in 26 matches and started in 25 for Louisville City in the Club’s historic inaugural season. During his time with the Club, Guzman helped Louisville City reach the Eastern Conference Finals. The former Liberty University Flame was a key contributor to the Club’s success in its first year.
Louisville City manager James O’Connor said he thanks Guzman for his hard work and for the valuable role he played in the squad.
“We are delighted to have played a part in helping Juan achieve his dream of playing first division soccer,” O’Connor said. “We will certainly miss having him here in Louisville, but he goes with our blessing and we wish him the very best of luck.”
Before his year with LouCity, the 27-year-old Guzman spent 2010-14 with his hometown Charlotte Eagles in USL. He appeared 92 times for the Eagles and scored four times.
