With reigning USL Championship Golden Glove winner Kyle Morton out injured, Louisville City FC will position goalkeeper Oliver Semmle between the posts for Saturday’s 10 p.m. ET kickoff at Monterey Bay FC.
Semmle, the star shot stopper on Marshall University’s 2020 national championship team, has already played plenty in purple. The German keeper was drafted this past offseason by Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids before landing in camp with LouCity.
Semmle started most of the club’s preseason games as Morton returned from a back injury dating to the 2022 season. Morton is out Saturday having absorbed a separate knock in a late-game collision last week in the 2023 opener at Orange County SC.
In front of of Semmle will be a familiar quartet of Amadou Dia, Jordan Scarlett, Sean Totsch and Manny Perez.
Tyler Gibson will man the holding midfield with newcomer Rasmus Thellufsen earning his second straight start. Paolo DelPiccolo will also start and wear the captain’s armband. Upon the opening whistle, DelPiccolo will become the first player to reach 200 City appearances across the regular season and playoffs.
Coach Danny Cruz elected for no changes among his front three with Enoch Mushaglusa, Cameron Lancaster and Brian Ownby lining up from left to right.
Defender Wes Charpie, midfielder Jorge Gonzalez, forward Wilson Harris and forward Ray Serrano were ruled out heading into Saturday due to injuries suffered during preseason. Additionally, U.S. youth international Josh Wynder is available off the bench after missing the season opener with an excused absence.
